Reading John | Together Through the New Testament 2010 | Week 4

Still reading? We are 3 weeks into this and I am sure that keeping up has become a challenge for some of us. Here is my confession...I only made it halfway through Luke. If you got a little behind (like me), can I make a few suggestions?

1. Don't try to read 20 pages this afternoon to "catch up", but instead just jump to John chapter 1 and start fresh. This is not about be able to check "reading the New Testament in 3 months" off your bucket list! It is about reading the Scriptures together so that we would see God's goodness and draw near to him.

2. Take the Apostle Paul's advice in Phillipians 3. He writes, "But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." So don't be discouraged, don't think about being behind, just press on toward the goal.

Answering the question, "Who is Jesus?"
This week we will read the Gospel of John. As we read, we will see phrase "I am ..." appear on Jesus lips over and over again (at least eight times in the Gospel of John!). These "I am" statements give us an unsurpassed picture of the glory and goodness of Jesus. So as we read this week, let's look for how Jesus describes himself. Here they are:

The "I am" Statments of Jesus
- I am the bread of life. (John 6)
- I am the light of the world. (John 8)
- Before Abraham was,  I am (John 8)
- I am the door of the sheep. (John 10)
- I am the good shepherd. (John 10)
- I am the resurrection and  the life. (John 11)
- I am  the way, and  the truth, and  the life. (John 14)
- I am the true vine. (John 15)
