Even Pastors have their days…
In August of 1926, so the newspaper read, a “holiness meeting… broke up in a riot when… ‘Maine’s Billy Sunday’ challenged an accusation made by Evangelist Norburry of Pennsylvania.” The “wildest disorder” as it was called, began after Norburry “challenged any preacher in Maine to refute his assertion... about “the second blessing being a second work of Christ.” Actually, the ensuing floor-fight was the climax of ongoing animosity between the Free Baptists and the Reformed Baptists of the region. The article said, “Hundreds of people climbed upon their chairs and began shouting” for the Rev. Norburry to give this preacher, this “Billy Sunday” of Maine, a chance to speak.
Well, for the record, that “Billy Sunday-sound-alike” was my grandfather, B.C Bubar. As best I can tell, my grandfather was trying to defend the pastors of his association and the “sheep of his flock.” Be certain he didn’t get thrown into jail; well not that time. That didn’t happen until two years later!
Now, I’m not much for shouting matches or climbing on the pews to defend a point, but I’m all for defending God’s flock! And our message this Sunday, the next in our series of the “I Am” sayings of Jesus in the gospel of John, is “I Am the Good Shepherd.” John points us to the amazing heart and work of the “Good Shepherd!” So, read John 10 and join us at 8:45 or 10:30 Sunday morning, where we will see not only how much Jesus cares for us, but how we are to care for one another.

Joe Bubar
