A Word about Bigger and Better

So much of Christmas is geared to the promotion of “bigger and better.”  Home Depot’s repeated advertisement this season wants you to know that they are doing “bigger and better;” but of course – it’s for you.  Market analysts want to know if Americans will spend more this Christmas.  So far, we’re off to a good start. Spending “the same as last year,” is equivalent to a national bank failure.

But when you think about it, the “best” came better than 2000 years ago.  And really, the only improvement we can hope for is how we relate to the One that came - Jesus Christ.

This week, as we continue our series on “Simple Christmas,” we’ll focus on what it means to have a “Simple Celebration.”  Our text is well into the story of the gospel, Luke 10:38-42, where we find that 50% of the people didn’t get how best to celebrate “Jesus.”  Ah, but 50% did!  Join us for the celebration of Christ in song, communion, and the applied study of God’s Word.  And, do your best to be with us from the very beginning of the service.

Before Sunday…

  • Earlier this week, along with hundreds of AWANA kids, I was amazed by the tremendous performance of our children’s choirs in The Christmas S.O.C.C.E.R. Team Wow! Let me tell you, there are three senior citizens that really steal the show!!  Time: Friday evening at 7:00. Place: our Worship Center.
  • If you want to help children really focus on the heart of what Christmas is all about, bring as many as you can Saturday morning at 9:00 am for a satellite-fed Simulcast of “Why do we call it Christmas” hosted by Veggietales and What’s in the Bible creator Phil Vischer.   $10 per family!

Sunday afternoon…

  • Amazing Missions! Chris and Karen Jackson will be here from 4:00 – 5:30 to report on their work in Cameroon.  They will be telling us about their work with mother tongue education, Sunday School work, and ministry among the Fulani tribe.  And all of you Operation Christmas Child people – they will share with us about how those gifts get shared in their part of Africa.  And yes… refreshments will be served!

From time to time - check out what is happening by going to  www.gracevine.com, our church's WEB page.  You'll find everything from downloadable sermons to the most recent schedule of events.

And I’ll see you in the pews!
